Frank Madden stands out as one of the most successful and dedicated trainers of young and developing show jumping talent in the United States. From Beacon Hill Show Stables in Colts Neck, New Jersey, he has trained several of the most promising junior equitation and amateur jumper riders – riders who have the potential to represent the United States at the highest levels of International competition.
The 2007 show year for the Beacon Hill team is off to a great start winning the Ronnie Mutch Equitation Championship for the fourth consecutive year, and the second year in a row for rider Maria Schaub. Jessica Springsteen captured the prestigious Christy Conard Perpetual Trophy. This is an overall award for the rider accumulating the most points during the Winter Equestrian Festival in the junior equitation division.
The 2006 show year included Maria Schaub being awarded the Bill Fitch Sportsmanship Trophy. This made the third consecutive year that a Beacon Hill rider had won this trophy. Also, she won the Ronnie Mutch Equitation Championship for the first time in 2006, making it the third year in a row for a Beacon Hill student to emerge victorious. It was a big year for Max Amaya who was elected to represent Argentina in the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany. Nicole Lakin was part of the team Gold Medal effort in the North American Young Rider Championships, and was also awarded the individual Silver Medal. Brianne Goutal made her first Nations Cup appearance for the United States showing in Buenos Aires, and was part of the Gold Medal team effort. Sloane Coles finished out her junior career winning the Monarch International Equitation Championship and was awarded the Bates USA Gold Medal. Maria Schaub won the Bronze.
The Maddens and several of Beacon Hill’s top riders were featured in the 2005 Animal Planet television series “Horse Power: Road to the Maclay.” Animal Planet filmed as Brianne Goutal made history as the first junior rider to win all the major equitation finals with her 2005 wins in the USEF Medal Finals, the Monarch International Equitation Championships, and the ASPCA Maclay Finals. Goutal won the BET/USET Talent Search Finals East and the Washington International Equitation Finals in 2004. Other Beacon Hill riders shone well in 2005. Sloane Coles won the Ronnie Mutch Equitation Championship and placed 2nd in the Washington International Equitation Championships, Bronze Medal in the Bates USA Equitation year-end rankings, and 8th in the ASPCA Maclay Finals. Maria Schaub had an outstanding year, finishing 1st in the Zone II ASPCA Regional Finals, 2nd in the BET/USET Talent Search East, 4th in the USEF Medal Finals, and Silver Medal in the Bates USA Equitation year-end ranking.
Highlights from 2004 included the North American Young Rider Championship where not only did Brianne Goutal and Leigh Healey earn team Gold, but Healey also took home the individual Silver and Abigail Carpenter earned the individual Bronze. Beacon Hill riders also earned coveted “Style of Riding” awards at such shows as the Washington International and the Devon Horse Shows.
The training ring, however, is just one area in which Frank and Stacia Madden contribute to the development of American Show Jumping. In addition to Frank and Stacia’s work producing the “Wachovia Jumper Classic at Beacon Hill,” Frank serves on several national committees, is on the Board of Directors for the Syracuse Invitational Sporthorse Tournament, and frequently donates his time and expertise by judging, giving clinics, and developing potential sponsors for the sport. The Maddens efforts have been recognized in various awards and honors such as Frank’s prestigious “Developmental Coach of the Year” awards from the United States Olympic Committee in 2004 & 2006 and Beacon Hill’s designation as “Show Hunter Horseman of the Year for 2005” by The Chronicle of the Horse.
